I have a Feb trip planned to both Palau and Truk. I will be diving from a land base operation. I prefer to dive with a local dive shop and veer away from the tourist package dive industry. Can anyone suggest or relate expirences with dive operators on both Palau and Truk? Accomodation information is also needed. Thanks, Scubaman

I have returned from a one month dive trip to Palau and Truk (Chuuk). My stay on Palau was fantastic. I dove with land based Samstours and they are the most organized dive operation that I have ever used. They have 12 dive boats and if there are more than 8 divers on one boat they supply an additional dive master. Dive times were 50 to 60 minutes with shorter air divers going to the surface with the extra dive master. The use of safety sausages was daily not only to flag the dive boat on drift dives but to identiy divers in the areas where boat traffic is prevelent. Avoid Truk and stay in Palau longer. Truk has great wrecks but unless the people of Chuuk get some pride in their home this place will continue to be a third workd country that happens to have WW2 wrecks in their lagoon. If you do go, avoid the Truk Stop dive operation and spend the extra money to stay at the Blue Lagoon Resort. Contact Gloria at the Blue Lagoon.
