Lightbulb CSU - Classroom spotlight: "Beginning scuba diving"

Quote:
Students who have wanted to scuba dive but don't know how to do it will learn the necessary skills and safety precautions they need to see the ocean in this class. At the end of the course, students earn their Professional Association of Diving Instructors certificate so they can scuba dive anywhere in the world.

What should students expect from this class?

They will be trained properly so they can go to Monterey and easily pass the certification test. They take the final, a written test, which shows me they have the knowledge and understanding of scuba diving. Pool training prepares students for open-water dives in Monterey. Students learn how to clear their masks, how their regulators work, about neutral buoyancy and what to do in out-of-air emergency situations. These are skills required for the PADI certification. If the student can successfully demonstrate those skills, then they become certified........

Sounds like a cheap way to get a C-card.

I wonder how many other colleges/universities offer this sort of course. Not sure if any of the UK colleges/universities do. Might be interesting to find out.

There a few here in the US that offer Scuba as a Phys Ed class. What I gather from reading other threads about college scuba, it's 6,8 or 12 week "Confined" class. The college course cost does not include check dives (in most cases). You do the college course and then get a referral for your check dives.
When I tried to go to college back in the 80's, I actually took "Sport Parachuting" as a PE course. The only "A" I ever made.

...parachuting...hmmm....I do not get why people willingly jump out of a perfectly serviceable plane before it lands...totally daft

I am thinking that colleges and uni's over here might use pools rather than the sea to teach their students the basics of diving...sea too cold. However there are diving towers in various places that could be used.

What's a "diving tower"?

The one in the link used to be owned/operated by the Royal Navy, but is now open for public use and is often used for commercial dive training.

I believe, if memory serves, that there is/was a tower in Pearl Harbour for sub escape diver training. Not sure if it is still there though, or if the public can use it.
