Default Ears problem

Hi to everybody, with my wife we just started process to be certified for OW diving. It is fun, but my problem is with a ears equalization. Somehow I can;t get that right ( for know only pool diving ) and it's painful. I blow to my ears, but look like is not working for me. Any hidden secret on this problem, anyone ? Or what I possibly do wrong.

I have a few tips: try equalizing prior to starting down. Always blow easy if your pinching your nose. You should hear both ears clear if you are on the surface. If you do not hear them clear you may what to get them checked by a doctor to make sure there is not a medical reason for the trouble.

Next if you have been shown how to clear your second stage (regulator) remove if and open wide as if you were yawning, remember to exhale. Some of my students found this easy to do.

Last swallow. Easier said then done. It took me awhile to get this. Over all this is how most people equalize on the surface after all you are in an one atmosphere.

Remember pool diving is the hardest on the ears. Your double the pressure on your ears. I promise it gets easier.

Just to add to Scuba Mama's post, dont blow too hard when attempting to equalize. You may damage the ear drum or other parts of the inner ear. I find moving my lower jaw side to side works best. This techniques moves the muscles which surround the eustacian tubes allowing air to move throught them.Try the different techniques to see what works and what doesnt.

I'd just add that you can always come up a few feet and try try again. That poopl is a killer. Something about being stuck at 10-12 ft

Try moving your Jaw side to side it will equalize for you as well. Also, try yawning with regulator in mouth. I can't do this, but some divers swear by it.

Also Tilting your hand back as if looking above your head (like comming up from a dive) if you do this on your way down, it should work, so my instructor said.

good luck and happy diving

I actually had a pool session today for my course, and noticed I had a little trouble equalizing at 12 feet. It gets easier with practice.

Tips (mentioned above as well):

-Equalize every few feet while descending.

-Don't blow too hard into your node while it is pinched

Other than that, if you continue to have trouble with it, talk to your instructor, he/she might have a trick.
