Default Keeping a good seal while wearing a mask.

Depending on the season, I may opt to grow a full beard, a partial beard, a mere mustache, or be clean shaved. With that being said, now I wonder how this might change how I wear a mask or if there are any manufacturers that make accommodations for this and still maintain a good seal? I'm asking this now, before I go out and purchase one.

I have facial hair, mustache/goatee. I bought a Dive Rite mask and its been great. It still leaks but only a little. I would highly recomend it.

It may or may not affect the seal. If you need to replace it, go to your local dive shop and try out all the mask for a seal. I have a mustache and never had a leak with any mask I used.

My first mask sealed over the mustache just fine. In fact, something about the way it seats (and probably some nose pressure) even make it slowly purge water if I let some in to defog the mask. Go figure. Now, it could also be that I've had no problem sealing over the stache because it is also easy to keep purging the mask, just put a little nose pressure in it while the glass is horizontal, just like you were purging a mask.

I've had others that leak, or seal fine. It really is a question of how well they fit over the mustache area, you may try on two dozen masks before you find one that REALLY fits well, not just fits.

If you need to dive with a mask that doesn't seal over the stache, just put some Vaseline in the mustache, work it down, it helps form a better seal and comes out with a little soap and water afterwards.

The folks who tell you facial hair is going to be a problem, just have their own problems with facial hair.<G>
