Question New member, need advice on dive knives

Hi I'm Steve and I'm a newly qualified PADI O/W diver (since last July anyway!). I'm from the South West of England and I have a few questions I need answered so I am starting with this one.
I have started purchasing my own equipment but I have one query with regards to dive knives. How do I travel abroad with one? Should I let the airline know its there and what do you do when you get to the country you want to dive at? Obviously all the bags are scanned so it won't look very good on me when they scan my bag and see a knife in it!I will be diving in the Red Sea in three weeks time so want to sort out my questions and get them answered.

Any info would be great.

Steve

Put it in your dive bag or suitcase, just not in a carry on.

Packing gear, I check on the airlines website to see what is allowed and whats not, they will usually have changes on any weights they allow you to carry and item list. Also, I have traveled with a small dive knife hooked to my BCD in my checked luggage, I did not have a problem but my roommates knife was confiscated by security before we had left the states. If you plan of taking your lights for night diving, take the batteries out and have them in a separate plastic bag for travel. It makes it easier going through security. The item that I take as a carry on also gets me stop and thats my camera. When they try to x-ray it look like a black box and they can not see in it. It's the price you pay to take pictures. Have fun, I am jealous.

Was that in a checked bag? Here's the TSA's guidelines, and knives are permitted in checked bags:

Yes, it was in the checked baggage. When we arrived in Roatan and she had a zip tie from the TSA stating they went through her bag and the knife had been removed. This was two years ago some changes my have taken place but I still don't trust the TSA.

"What's today? Tuesday? Knives are allowed one day a week......wait mabey it's Thursday....no I'm sure it's Friday. I'm not sure we'll go by the old standard - I'm feeling generous today so they're OK!!!!" TSA supervisor

I have just spoken to the Dive school I think I'm using whilst in Eygpt and Egypt do not allow dive knives, not even into the country.

Having a dive knife is really no big deal unless you have a specific use for it. The main safety issue they solve is cutting fishing line you might become entangled with. Bring EMT shears instead. You can get them for around $5.

I prefer this:

Takes up much less space than EMT shears.

Yeah, I didn't mention those because the authorities would probably consider that a knife.
