Default OW course if disabled?

Hi, I have completed 4 try dives in Cyprus and Thailand (all to 12meters at 52mins. 50mins * 2 and 48 mins) and would like to do the Open Water Course while on holiday in the Red Sea in 5 weeks time. The problem I have is that I have only partial use of my right arm, in that I can not bend it due to it being pinned with metal plates after a fishing boat accident. On the dives that I have done already I have only had to demonstrate the beginners tasks such as clearing masks, changing air supplies, throwing away my regulator and retrieving it etc. with no problems.

I have bought myself the Padi open water DVD and have noticed several tasks that may be a problem for me i.e. climbing out of a pool by myself and using both arms to change between snorkel and BCD air.

Will this cause me to fail the course, am I deluding myself into thinking I can do anything other than try dives? I do have the necessary letter from my doctor that I always take with me to state I am fit to dive, other than my arm injury.

Regards

Martin

There are lots of divers with more severe disabilities than you. I would suggest doing the classroom stuff and pool dives with a local instructor who can help you with techniques to work around any problems you may have, then do the open water stuff on vacation. Better yet, do it all at home. Who wants to their vacation doing check-out dives?

The are training returning servicemen with multiple amputations to scuba. I think they should be able to accomidate you with no problem. Let them know so there won't be any suprises.
