Default Regulator Recommendations?

I'm looking for any good advice on choosing the right Regulator. I have no idea what the difference is in any of the regs. and there is pretty big difference in price. So any good what to look fors, is appreciated.

That's a hard question. Like anything else, you get what you pay for, and most any name-brand reg will do the job. Here's a couple of things to consider:

You live in the midwest so you will want something that performs well in colder water. Some are made that way, others have a cold-water add-on kit.

Service: get something that your LDS can service, even if you don't buy it from them.

IMHO, stuff like durability, ease of breathing, and reliability tend to be better the more you spend.

Finally, ask other local divers you meet. Everyone has an opinion on this and most are more than glad to share it. You will find that good, experienced divers have the best gear and can explain why it is the best without the sales pitch. They might not all use the same makes and models but they all look for the same high quality.

I recently purchased a new reg after 19 years with a Poseidon. I did alot of reasearch on the web. The site that I found most useful was scubadiving.com. They have extensive gear reviews and testers choice. Once you narrow down the search, try renting it or a similar model from a local dive shop to try it out. I also asked some friends of mine on the state police dive team as well. It will take some time, but you will find a reg that fits your needs.
Good luck and dive safe.

I love my dive rite. Inexpensive and bullet proof.

I just got back from a week in the Keys diving with Conch Republic, a DiveRite dealer who uses all DiveRite stuff for rental gear. He let me try out the new Hurricane reg. Loved it & bought it.

This spring I purchased a Apeks ATX50. Of the many regs that I tried out, it was the easiest breathing thanks to the adjustability and the most comfortable mouth piece. It is also rated for cold water diving.

If you look closely you'll see the dive rite looks suspiciously like the Apeks. HHMMMM!

Not really. Another diver told me that the DiveRite was manufactured by Beuchat for DiveRite.

Maybe. The bench monkeys I dive with swear the design is APEKS but is not finished as nicely. Perhaps they bought the design and have the lowest bider make it? Whatever it's great stuff. Breathes wll in cold, deep, mud and under a load. Plus I like the price.

So far I've only taken it to 115' off Key Largo, but New Year's day will be the test: 120' into the mud at Mermet. I like the price too, and it's DiveRite, so you know it's bulletproof.
