Default Anyone else obsessed with Shark Week?

Haha, well I am. I have been ever since i was a kid... (now 21). But did anyone happen to catch the episode of "Dirty Jobs: Jobs that bite"? If so, what did you guys think about the Shark Repellent they have developed? I thought it was amazing how there were 15-20 reef sharks around them, then after the repellent was thrown in, they immediately dispersed. I mean wow, in less than 10 seconds they were gone!

I just found this extremely interesting.

Sure but who wants to chase them away? Swimming with them is exciting! It's cool to see them on TV even widescreen HD but being in the water when one of them slides by is invigorating.

I saw that episode. The only thing about it that i didn't find practical was that the tip couldn't get wet until you threw it in the water. So you would have to issolate it while diving. otherwise it's only effective from the surface. But ya... way interesting.

I completely agree. Once i get some experience under my belt after certification, I would love to go on a shark dive. It's always been a dream of mine.

And Scuba Jerm, I know what you mean, but I'm sure that they will find a way to put a watertight cap over it in order to make it submersable. But the "uber potato gun" (as i like to call it ) was a great Idea for lifeguards. Being a lifeguard myself, i love the idea, hahaha.

The joke is you can pick out the divers when at the beach. Someone yells SHARK! People run from the water. Divers run towards it while gearing up!
My wife (not a diver) thinks I've lost my marbles when I go chasing sharks in the water. My indignant response is "My being crazy has nothing to do with my chasing after sharks!" When swimming with sharks just make sure you can swim faster then your buddy. It's the main reason I carry a big honkin' knife. It's to slow down my buddy so I can swim faster then him! Ain't the buddy system great?

hahahahaha, that's great. I figure as long as i stay calm and stay away from the surface then I'll be fine. I'll just tie a piece of bait around my buddy's foot if need be hahaha

Default Real Encounter

My 100th dive was marked with a real encounter. In the Bahama's my buddy and I went to explore a coral head and noticed a weird happening with the fish, shortly after realizing they were forming a bait ball. The cause was three reef sharks using a form of wolf pack hunting. It was one of the coolest things I have ever seen. We would have watched longer the the biggest shark did a pass by of my buddy and myself. We backed out of there very calmly. I figured it was his way of saying close enough. I watch shark week to show my husband I am not nuts and sharks are not mindless killers. No, he does not know about my 100th diver experience.

My wife dosen't dive, swim or even get her face wet when she takes a shower! Unfortunately I'm usually diving with one of my brothers or sister so my exploits chashing the sand tigers off the outer banks in NC and trying to touch their tails always get back to her. So far she continues to express concern for my well being although she has taken responsibility for paying my life insurance bill. HMMM

lol, my parents are hesitant for me getting certified, and aren't real happy with my desire to swim with sharks. But i did get a call from mom today after she heard about the Arrested terrorists and she was like, "Go ahead and swim with the sharks, it's safer than flying at this point! " hahahah.

I go to an Aeronautical university btw, i'm studying to become an air traffic controller.

You will really like sharks. Watching one come in from the open ocean and up a reef head was like watching a jet fighter on a precision move. Sharks are very stealth and move with amazing speed. The first time I saw one my fear was turned it fascination. They are truly and amazing to watch, also remember to respect them, you are no 2 on the food chain in there home. A tip if your dive buddy keeps calling you chum on the boat you might want to reconsider the dive.
