Hey Vegas,

Great to see your back and feeling in the pink. I'm around job has been awful lately. I wish the job market was better I'd leave. I'll be meeting Ken this weekend at Haigh Quarry in Illinois. It will be hot top side but should be a good day.

Welcome Back Vegas..
Glad to see everything has healed up well for you and you're back to getting wet.
Well, as you can tell, the forum looks different. Ally and Enrique have moved on to other ventrues and passed the forum off to new owners that have yet to discuss anything with the Mods or Advisors of the forum. Honestly, since A & E left, the forum has basically died. No idea what the plans are because our questions aren't being answered by the "powers that be." (Whoever that is)
As for Scuba Mama, as you can see above, I guess she was busy and just didn't make it on the forum for a little while. Ken and I have made the bulk of the posts in the last month.
Haven't gotten much diving in.. We did do a quick trip to Cooper River a few eeeks back diving for Megladon teeth. Came back with a nice little haul. Next trip is to the Graveyard of the Atlantic to dive the U-352 and other wrecks for 3 days in August. Can't wait for that one..
Welcome back, again..

Default thanks for the warm welcome home!

Hi guys!
I tried to post last week, but I hit a wrong button and erased it before I could post it.

I hope Mgictwnger and Scuba Mama had a nice weekend diving!
and I'm so sorry to hear that your job is so rough lately, Scuba Mama!
I went through that about a year ago, and can only say that I'm grateful that I got through it without causing any bloodshed!

Thanks to all of you for the warm welcome home!

...and Dale! diving for Megaladon Teeth!! OH MY Gosh!! I am SOOO Jealous!
That is SO COOL!! you don't know any place out west they can be found, do you? OH!

Our dives out at Lake Mohave were great!
We did 3 dives, the first and the third on the schoolbus and van -
there's a big striper that has taken "ownership" of the van now...he swims around and around as if to say "it's MINE it's MINE it's MINE!" - and yes, there's a large school of fish living in the bus...I love it!

Dive #2 was on the north side of Cabinsite Cove; a pair of Diver-master candidates were going to show us the cabin cruiser that's suppose to be sunk there. It was a very pretty dive (though I had some anxiety at one point - that's a first for me! but I just "breathed through it" and all came out OK), but we never found the boat. The long surface swim to get to the sight deterred us from trying again on Dive #3.

Next weekend it's out to Cali for our two days on the No Respect!! whooo-hooo!

Sounds fun Vegas.. What was causing your anxiety? Cold water, low viz or what? Breathing through it was perfect. I'm just wondering if you know what caused it.

I don't know of any Megladon sites out West, but I'll check around. We have two over here on the Right side. Cooper River in SC and Venice Beach in FL. Cooper is only about 5 hours from here while Venice Beach is between 8 and 9.

I think it was the surface swim -- I thought I was rested before descending, but I think now I was still breathing hard, and then descending to 70', I believe I may have been hyperventilating a bit.

"instincts" told me (at 72') to pull this "thing" out of my mouth, and get this mask off my face so I could breath better!

I stayed calm, and recognized that was NOT the solution.
I checked my depth, closed my eyes for a minute, (used my hand to hold my reg in my mouth "just in case") and just BREATHED...checked my depth, still the same - good - signalled my buddy that I was "a little crazy/narced/anxiety and was going to ascend just a little".

He watched me close as I ascended to about 65'. stopped. closed my eyes for a second and just Breathed. checked depth - still the same - good. Still felt not-so-good, "instincts" yelling that the SURFACE was where I wanted to be.

again....NOT the answer...stay calm....breath slowly and deeply...check depth. signal buddy again... up 10 more feet SLOWLY.

I crossed a thermocline and got up to 55'. I think the deep breathing, insistance on staying calm, and the slightly warmer temp got me feeling a little better.

I felt ok to follow along with the rest of the party -they all seemed a little confused and weren't going anywhere really anyway because..."wasn't that cabin cruiser right here? where the hell did it go?"... kept them all from heading off in one direction or another for quite a bit.

As they finally picked a direction to go, and all came up about 10' to 15', so I took the opportunity to slowly cruise up to about 45' and hang about 15' - 20' above everybody. My buddy was not far below me, and one of the Divemasters-in-training was keeping an eye on me, and getting the "ok" signals from me every couple of minutes.

After some time at 45' I felt ALMOST back to normal...and finally could appreciate the "view" (rarely have I been able to see over 40' in our local lakes!). I still wasn't excited to see the fish like I normally am, but I certainly felt I was OK to go on.

As the group continued slow-sightseeing-swimming-around-ascent...so did I ... at 18' I leveled off, and let the rest meet me at that depth for the safety stop. After several more minutes we all went to the surface together.... and even seeing the surface swim ahead of me...I was pretty relieved to be there breathing the open air. (and keeping my mask ON just for good measure...well, and to keep from losing my contact lenses too! lol)

Ya, I think the exertion from the surface swim, it being only an hour after lunch, the HOT day (air temp 100 degrees) down through the thermoclines to water about 64 degrees at depth, and not being quite as physically fit as I was last year (a couple of months on the couch after surgery will have it's effects!) - all contributed to this experience.

but I really want to add that I feel VERY strongly that reading all these Scuba newsgroups, and learning, learning, learing, from experienced divers, reading accounts of other divers in similar situations, and COMMITTING to
memory 'what to do if this should happen' sort of stuff made the difference for me ....
it made a situation that in all reality, honestly could have turned into a disaster...instead, just be a not-all-that-interesting story (certainly less interesting on the beach than "Where the HELL did that boat go, anyway?")

Great description.. I've had that happen one time a few years ago. I had the worst tme trying to get down one day in the Gulf. The waves wer 2-3 foot and it was awful at the surface. So, I was trying to get down quick. What I didn't realize was I still had air in my BC. I had a back-inflate, so I couldn't see the air or feel it. I struggled and struggled in a very hurried manner because the waves were so bad. Finally, I tired myself out and was about to give up. They threw me a line and guided me to the descent line. When I tried to pull myself down, that's when I realized I had air in my wing. I let it out, and descened, but I was so winded, I was very uneasy, viz was junk and then I hit a thermocline at about 20 feet. I started to hyperventilate also. I closed my eyes, kept descending and just concentrated on breathing. By the time I hit the bottom, the viz had cleared, I adjusted to the temp and was good to go. But I had to "will" myself down and to breathe normally.
You done good girl.

Very scary when the doubts hit ya while diving. It also seems that you have had good training and stuck to what you knew. Glad it turned into a good experience for ya Vegas.

I tell my divers anyone has the right to call the dive at anytime without needing to explain and they should question or tease someone else in the group who might call a dive. I reminded them they're lives are at stake with poor judgment this can go wrong and fast.

I have an advance class this weekend at Pearl Lake and can tell one of my guys is very nervous so I will be spending some additional time helping pass the phase. I am sure after a dive or two he'll settle down.
