Default Water proof vs water resistant

I'm just curious what distinguish waterproof gadgets from water resistant. If you have a watch is water resistant, can you use it under water?

Water resistant gadgets can withstand inclement weather condition like rain, snow, storm, etc. However, these gadgets can not be submerged under water. Only water proof gadgets can be used under water.

You can use your water resistant watch underwater but that is tantamount to bidding goobye to your watch. It is not waterproof thus not in a way designed for underwater environment.

I believe the terms water resistant and water proof are used by manufacturers interchangeably. For Example.... my Ripcurl watch says "water resistant" now if that meant it could only handle an occasional wetting from rain, or snow, that would mean this watch should've been dead a few times over by now. I've taken this watch down on every dive.. to depths of 85 feet, it has never complained once, it still works perfectly. Now other manufactures that say "water resistant" may not perform that well, that's why I say they use both terms to mean the same (in some cases).

I tend to agree with Scuba Jerm's assessment of "I believe the terms water resistant and water proof are used by manufacturers interchangeably." My Casio looks like a diver's watch (one way bezel, screw down crown) reads "WR200M" on the front and "Water Resistant 20Bar" on the back but I think the owners manual states to not use it under water. I figure that comes from some lawyers as a way of saying that if it fails under water and results in an accident it's not their responsibility.

Here in the US the term "water proof" is seldom seen due to very strict legal requirements for it's use. Even dive watches and such are marked "water resistant".

Yeah.. I don't think I see the words "water-proof" used on anything except sun tan lotion anymore. My watch is a dive watch, but it's rated as "Water Resistant to 600ft/200m".. It's been down to 137 feet with no problems at all.

Interesting, I must admit that I have never seen any dive watch marked with anything other than 'water resistant'. I have an old citizen Aqualand which will log depths up to a maximum of 100 metres yet is supposedly water resistant to 200 metres.

Here's one for you. I was looking over a Electrical Catalog in the flash light section and found that one Flashlight in the description lists it at Submersible to 500ft while another one says Waterproof and then you get the ones that have water resistant??? So I don’t think they are being used interchangeably by manufacturers. I might tend to think there is some kind of testing they do and if it makes it past a depth mark they are able to label it waterproof. Just a guess.
