Congrats on the dive instructor course. I took my instructors training in Florida however I teach in north America. I was already connected with a shop and found out what was most important for my local diving, dry suit for example. I then based my msdt training on those needs and completed my training in north America. I have noticed a trend for enriched air diving. Also when in roatan in speaking with the shop manager she mentioned a key is ability to repair gear and compressors again due to location. So my advise, figure out where you would like to teach then go after the msdt based on local diving and needs. This will save you time and money. I have found at this level diving shops are pretty competent.

Leon

I notice that you are from the dark depths of Surrey. Are you currently affiliated with a dive shop there, or is most of your diving being carried out abroad?

I agree with ScubaMama that you should decide just where it is you will do the bulk of your instructing and then base your training needs around the local diving needs.

If you need any help and don't mind travelling up north, there are a group of us who would love to assist you in attaining your goals!

Best wishes and lots of luck.

Hi Leon,
I used to work on Utila, and I'm curious as to where you did the IDC there, and why you don't want to continue through MSDT with your own course director. I would have thought they'd make it clear that they'd like to help you reach that goal, and would have made it easy, convenient, and affordable.

I agree with the others here. Why would you go to the Carribean to do your IDC? Do you plan to teach in the Carribean or at home in the UK? If it's the latter, I highly recommend doing your next IDC in more local waters.

It's a far different thing instructing students in warm blue water than it would likely be in your local environment. Go ahead and take your specialty instructor courses locally and take advantage of the knowledge a local CD can impart.

James
