How true! There was a fantastic case reported in the UK in the early 90's just before I left the Navy.
Some divers down in the south of England has purchased a wreck from the Receiver of Wrecks. It was situated off a town called Littlehampton. These guys dived the wreck quite regularly and were more than happy for others to dive it as long as they respected the wreck and did not remove anything of significance from it.
Long story short, there was a series of really bad storms over the winter period and the guys decided to dive the wreck early January to see what state their prize was in. On diving around the largely intact bow area they noticed a large scour had appeared underneath the bow. One of the more adventurous guys swam into the scour and came across a large pool of mercury! The mercury had been contained in the forward area of the ship and had, until the storms ruptured the tank, been inaccessible.
They took a sample of the mercury to an expert who was amazed at the quality. On raising the bulk of the mercury that they had found they made over two hundred thousand pounds! Not a bad return for an initial twenty five pounds investment (the amount they had paid for the wreck).
