howdy!
I don't think I have posted much since my trip to California to dive on the Yukon.....
Twas a beautiful day, the boat was great, and the Captain was fantastic.
No one was rushed, and we had a wonderful time.
Dive #1: Our group of six stayed together and enjoyed looking around the outside of the wreck. Awesome sea life, anenomes everywhere! The water was cold (of course) and vis was about 25'. It was hard to appreciate the size of the ship without traveling it's entire length.
Dive #2: I heard it was great. Yours truly here drank some milk with breakfast that may have been a day beyond expired, and (after cooling off in the ocean before the dive didn't quiet the stomache) called the dive. I climbed back aboard for an extra dose of dramamine and passed the time staring at the horizon and chatting with the Captain.
(After gagging in my reg during ascent on dive #1, I just figured it was better to call the dive, than WISH I had called the dive - you know what I mean?)
The others split into a group of 3 (two buddies earning their wreck cert and the instructor) and a group of 2 (my buddy and our DM who came along with us). Team one penetrated the wreck and had a wonderful dive I heard! Team 2 (who I would have been with) swam the length of the ship and back, saw plenty of neat stuff, and was able to really appreciate the size of the it.
Dive #3: We moved over to another site, and dove on the collapsed NOSC tower. I REALLY liked this site. Steel beams criss-crossing every direction, yet Plenty of room to move around. Fish, anenomes, Huge snails, really interesting stuff to see!
We came across a
pile of huge Starfish; it was as if someone was getting ready to do the Starfish laundry and had just poured them in a heap in the middle of the sandy floor, ready for sorting! It was the darnedest thing! Any idea why they might all be sitting in a pile like that?
Another thing, my buddy and I saw a track in the sand....looked like someone had been dragging a stick along the bottom....curious, we followed it, oh so slowly, straight ahead....then around a bend...and sure enough - there was the source! We had been tracking a snail the size of my hand. LOL! Some amazing Sea-trackers we are! LOL!
Despite spending a bit of time being "green around the gills" a great time was had by all - and I have to say that if you heading out to dive this wreck with a team of six or less, the Hydrodiver is THE Boat to take. Everyone in our party was ranting and raving about the Captain all the way back to Vegas.
...and I learned a VERY important lesson about making sure you have sunblock on BEFORE you find yourself not feeling well, sitting on the deck in the sunshine, too queasy to go find it in your gear bag and apply it. (ouch!

)
