So on Saturday we went on down to Lake Mohave, at Bulllhead City, AZ...
Scott & I took 5 tanks each, an e-z up, a cooler full of goodies and
planned to make a big day of it! The weather prediction was
114 degrees and "abundant sunshine". LOL! (gotta love living in
the desert!)
We did our first dive on the North cove of Cabinsite Point and
managed to locate the sunken cabin cruiser that rests at about
60' there without any difficulty. Vis was beautiful - about 35 feet
or more, and a variety of fish kept making appearances and saying hello.
Our second dive we went into the South cove and secured our
flag to the school bus located about 30' from shore and about
45' down. This turned out to be a nice dive with most of
our time spent around 20' poking in the rocks. The combination of
a shallow dive and my air consumption being FANTASTIC lately, made
another dive on the same tank easy.
Around 1 pm our friends joined us (my instructor Steve, his wife Traci,
and two of his newer, just certified students, Tonya and Chad).
I did a dive with Traci, then one with the whole group.
(All of these in the South Cove). We saw all of the usual local residents
of the lake - bass, crappie, bluegill, perch, a CUTE little catfish, and
some of the Biggest Crawdads I have EVER seen! (we almost caught
one, but those buggers are Quick!)
After some snacks and a surface interval around an hour, I went back
out with Traci and Scott....we had a nice dive, focusing mostly on
getting face to face with the fishies
As the sun started to get low in the sky, we did our final dive, Steve, Scott,
Chad, Tonya and I. A nice tour around the schoolbus, over to the van, and
back along the edge of the cove, then back to our starting point.
This being my 6th dive of the day, and Scott's 5th, we both stayed
at around 28' feet, while the others stayed a little deeper. The reason was
that the thermocline was so INTENSE, it was like diving in bath-water above
(around 77 degrees) and below? even a 7 mil wasn't quite enough
without a hood
too. brrr!
The only mishap was on the way back to our exit point on the
final dive Tonya's inflater stuck open on her
BC, - quickly we grabbed her and kept her from shooting to
the surface and Steve disconnected the inflater hose.
She got scared, but didn't panic.
Following Steve's instruction she released air from her BC till she was
alright, we got back to the exit point, and when she surfaced she
remembered to orally inflate her BC. A little suprise on the dive, but
not a disaster.
All that diving, the heat, and the 1 and 1/2 hour drive to get there, meant
we were NOT driving home that night....we got a room at the Colorado Belle
in Laughlin for $45 and rinsed most of our gear in the shower

before
crashing for the night.
A nice weekend...and alot of pages to fill out in my logbook - wow!
