How many Lakes wrecks have you managed to dive onto, Ken?

Must be quite an incredible feeling having them looming out of the murk at you sometimes
I'm not sure offhand how many wrecks I've been on. I have been on the one you're thinking of, we call it the Milwaukee Car Ferry, a couple of times, and it is incredible.

And you hit it right on the head: seeing a huge ship emerging from the gloom is indescribable.

Whenever I see the programmes on television about the Great lakes wrecks, it is just incredible....I can only imagine what it must be like actually being there and seeing them face to face. You are a very very lucky guy having so much on your doorstep, Ken...

Although, of course, it can never be forgotten that lives were lost on many of the ships, it is still quite spinechilling seeing the ships from a diver's eyes in the documentaries.

I have always been a big fan of 'Wreck Detectives' and other programmes like that. Some of the ships visited are mindblowing in where they are and how they got there.

I saw the wreck detectives our in the Greek island they are doing a special on a wreck out there. I saw them at Our World Underwater in February in Chicago. They are fun to listen to in person.

One of my favourites from the diving documentaries (not sure which one though) was the Russian ship in the Baltic that is stood bolt upright in the seabed with it's stern pointing up towards the surface. The propellers draped in yards and yards of discarded fishing nets.

Another of the most dramatic wreck docs was Wilhelm Gustlof, Goya & Steuben from WW2 in the Baltic, the refugee ships sunk by Russian subs with the loss of around 20,000 lives. Ballard went with the film/dive crew to find the three wrecks and had survivors with them to lay flowers over where the wrecks lie.

Amazing films...truly amazing.
