Milwaukee (Lake Michigan) 9/6 I organized an all-day charter on one of my favorite boats, the Enterprise throught the "Chicago Scuba Meetup Group", a Yahoo thing which has gotten off the ground this year. The boat usually sails out of Waukegan, IL, but the captain brings her up to Milwaukee for a couple of weeks each year to dive that area.
We did four dives:
Two on the Car Ferry Milwaukee, a huge craft that was used to carry railroad cars across the lake and sank fully loaded in 1929. Vis was fair to poor, but the water was warm: 52F on the bottom at 125', unuaually warm for lake Michigan. On the first dive, two divers couldn't find the mooring line and made a free ascent, surfacing not to far from the boat. The same happened to me and my buddy on the second dive, but we went up the line to a second dive boat on the wreck. While doing a 15 minute deco stop our captain almost called the Coast Guard, but we surfaced before he did. He was not happy.
The third and fourth dives, on the Prinz Willem V and the No. 6 Dredge were fun and without incident.
Weather was 72F, slight breeze, perfect.
