Question Taking scuba equ. over the boarder

I was just wondering if it was possible to bring scuba equ. Over the boarder, more of less asking about the scuba tanks. If I wanted to do some diving across the boarder in the U.S. and I rented some scuba tanks / gear for the weekend would they let me bring them across the boarder from Canada to the U.S. and back again???

Equipment is no problem, tanks might be. I would contact the customs service or somebody like that.
