| BVI - Coroner's Inquest into death of American tourist begins Quote:
The Coroner’s Inquest into the death of an American Tourist, who disappeared in the BVI Waters while diving on the 19th December 2007, commenced in the Magistrate’s Court today (26th March 2008), before the Coroner Valerie Stephens.
The deceased, 53 year old Wayne Francis Johanning of Minnesota was Scuba Diving off Green Bay Jost Van Dyke on 19th December 2007, along with his wife, two sons and a family friend, when he disappeared under water.
An extensive search by Police Marine Officers and Volunteers on 19th December 2007, revealed nothing.
However, on the 20th December 2007 at about 10:00am certain remains of a white Caucasian male was recovered floating in the waters off Green Cay Jost Van Dyke, and surrounded by “Tiger Sharks”.
An autopsy was performed on the remains on 24th December 2007, to determine the cause of death.
A five member Jury comprising of 3 women and 2 men were sworn in before the Coroner Mrs. Valerie Stephens, on 26th March 2008.
Crown Prosecutor Inspector Jefferson Knight, who is presenting the witnesses and exhibits on behalf of the State, called four witnesses, including 3 Sea rescue Volunteers of VISAR who participated in the rescue and recovery of the deceased tourist.
The Inquest was adjourned to April 2008, to facilitate the testimony of the overseas witnesses in the matter.
