Scuba Diver’s Body Found Off Pompano Beach (CBS4) FT. LAUDERDALE The Broward Sherriff’s homicide detectives are investigating the death of an experienced diver who was scuba diving from his morning in Pompano Beach.
Officials say the 60-year-old, Larry Starr, was diving alone although other people were aboard the 27-foot vessel. The crew was about one mile off shore and half a mile south of the Pompano Beach pier.
Officials say it’s believed Starr went for a dive about 10:00 a.m. or shortly after.
After about 52 minutes later when Starr hadn’t surfaced, a dive buddy found him face down in between 85 to 90 free of water at the bottom of the ocean.
Around 11:19 a.m., the boaters radioed for help while head back to shore. The vessel was escorted in by BSO’s Marine Patrol Unit and met by paramedics.
Pompano Beach Fire Rescue paramedics pronounced Starr dead at the scene.
Officials say an autopsy will determine the cause and manner of death; however, foul play is not suspected.
