Most places make you buy a certain amount of gear to attend the classes (mask, fins, snorkel, weights/belt) The rest is up to the diver. Since there are so many variations of everything (computer, BC's, wet suits, etc) the beginner is better off renting each type and see what is better for them. Taking into account the type of diving they will be doing, the conditions and even comfort of the particular piece of equipment will be something they will need to do before purchasing anything.
As for purchasing second hand equipment: I guess it's OK as long as they get every piece checked out and serviced by a qualified technician. I personally don't do it, but, to each their own. |
