Question What is the best age to start or finish diving?

Is there an age limit with diving, do you have to be a certain age before you can start...and is there an age when it is no longer permitted or advised to continue diving?

This is a re-post of the answer I put on John's question asking about the same thing:
My nephew was certified (PADI Jr) at 10. He is now 15 and has no problems. His parents waited for his sister to reach 12 before getting her certified. Agagin, no problems. I think it really depends on the individual. When they are "mature" enough to handle the book work and are intrerested enough to pay attention in class then they are old enough to get certified. The PADI rule is 10.
As for the other side of the spectrum: I think health and mental well being will dictate that. I've known an 83 year old man that didn't know his own name, yet, I also know an 87 year of member of the "Black Sheep Squadron" that can tell me stories about Pappy Boyington like it happened yesterday. It's truely up to the individual and what their minds/bodies will allow them to do.
