Default Homemade jon line

A problem with making deco stops in rough seas is that the anchor/mooring line is being jerked around by the dive boat's movement, making it hard to hold on to. The solution is a jon line, basically a 6-10' rope or length of rope or webbing with hooks of various sorts at one or both ends. One end is attached to the mooring line when you reach deco depth, the other to the diver. The problem with this system is that the movement of the mooring line is still transferred to the diver. Manufactured jon lines cost about $30 on up.

A possible solution I've come across is to use bungee chord instead of rope. I've made a 7.5' line with parts from the hardware store for around $20: 8' of custom-cut bungee, two bronze spring clips, and rope clamps to attach them with at either end.

I'll let you guys know how it works out.

for some reason I have this image of you being pulled down then being reversed bungeed 8' out of the water! I imagine it to be quite spectacular from the boat. I wonder if you would make it high enough to be seen on the ships radar? If you could get somebody to video the event from the boat I smell a you-tube hit! I bet despite yourself you utter those famous words, "watch this"!!!!!

Won't be the first time.

really though I settle in on a vertical weighted line or the anchor line and keep an extremely light grip on the line so it slides up or down as needed. If the current isn't bad I'll just hang out in the area. The weighted line is the best. It seems folks have it in their heads "I MUST HANG ON THE DECO LINE" the weighted line is usually empty.

I just want to be able to hook myself to the mooring line without the yanking.

I'm curious to hear how well this worked?

I've never had to use it yet.
