Other then that I am teaching some weekends at the pool during the long winter months. |
Yup! an "Eco-Dive" out here is generally an event sponsored by a business or organization...there's a 'retailers association' (a group of LDSs) that sponsors them...I've also been to one sponsored by "Shark Reef" (Mandalay Bay Resort, Las Vegas) that was alot of fun.
They promote the event through e-mails, flyers, word of mouth, and communications to any local dive clubs....the events consist of, usually, morning sign up, a free T-shirt, two clean-up dives (non divers can sign up and pick up around the shore areas), a big bar-b-Que lunch, lots of socializing, and then drawings for gifts and prizes.
Sometimes a rep for one manufacturer or another will come out and promote their stuff (We had a Scuba Pro rep out in September with all sorts of equiptment to demo)
When the clean up is in the marinas they will go at set times and restrict boat traffic in the area. - often the organization will supply large mesh bags to load up with trash and whatnot - and sometimes there are volunteers paddling around in kayaks with empty bags to trade for full ones if you get all loaded up.
Sometimes there are so many donated prizes that Everyone wins something. My sweetheart & I have won gift certificates to the LDS and a kayak trip for four down the Colorado River! Fun stuff.
Always a great time!
let's see....Febuary....are you sure you want to stay dry? I am sure we will be having an eco-dive some time in Febuary.
....and last night at a party my buddy and I won a 2 for 1 certificate for a two tank dive on a Lake Mead charter (Feb 9th I think). So if you want to get out to the islands (I love diving Sentinel Island) in Lake Mead - you would already know someone on the boat!

It's not Little Cayman by ANY stretch of the imagination, but If you'll already be in town - why not blow a few bubbles in Las Vegas's drinking water while you're here? <grin>
