Default Diving Mistakes

I found a program on this weekend on court tv talking about the daily life of being a San Diego Lifeguard (no not Bay Watch). It was very interesting how they use the police department and how the two teams interact to keep beach and water actives safe.

One of the stories they featured was a missing diver. Once the report was in a diver was missing on the Yukon Wreck and it was a least 100ft dive. Lifeguard dive teams set up and looked for the missing divers. They searched for 3 hours in teams. By 7:00pm they called the search off for the night. The following day they located the diver, he was trapped in a room in which he should not have been. They had closed it to divers or six years ago because it was dangerous. Once located it was interesting that the police unit also dove down took pictures of the victim his gear and how he was positioned. Then with the coroner waiting at the surface, they brought the body up and they did the process over. It was concluded diver error.

This diver had dove this wreck before and felt he knew it well enough and with out telling his buddy he dove into the wreck. He buddy once realizing he as missing had surfaced.

This are the types of easy mistakes that can kill a diver. I'm been here before, I know what I'm doing and I don't need anyone telling me no. What they ended up saying was goodbye.

With a combination of deep and wreck, plan your dive and dive your plan, there is no room for error.

Be safe everyone and we can share fun stories of diving.

Beach Patrol San Diego, I looked on Court TV, it was in the first season, show 2. It also looks as if the third season has three shows evolving divers.

We have a small club which we open out to local divers. The social aspects of the club are pretty good and people meet up one evening a month for some food, a few drinks and an opportunity to meet up with like minded people and talk or even organise some diving.

We invited our local police divers over to give our group an informal presentation one evening. It was very, very informative. Graphic as well. The slide show they gave let all divers attending know that accidents can and invariably do happen. The underlying ideal throughout the presentation was that there is no place for complacency in diving and, as ScubaMama says, EVERYONE needs to plan their dive and dive the plan.

We have also had some very memorable visits from the Maritime Coastguard Agency and the Royal National Lifeboat Institute. They are always keen to interact with divers and share experiences and advice.
