Default Diving Ranks

Hello everyone,

I'm familiar with the different levels of certification from PADI and NAUI.

Has anyone ever heard of any organization (any Country's civilian or military agency) using "Stars" to indicate the level of certification someone has?

PADI does use a form of stars for rating, however, it's for the rating of the dive shops and resorts. Divers are NOT rated by stars. If you are rated an open water diver your card states open water diver. If your rating is higher such as a divermaster your number and letters will note your ranking (dm-112093 for example). If you visit PADI website you will notice the ranking with stars listed by some of dive shops and restores.

Again to be very clear divers are not ranked by stars.

Sure they are. The jerk who dropped his tank on my foot last year gets no stars. The saint who has that oddball tool you need gets five.

I learned as a new diver, the one who drops, drips or is a general pain is the one who has elected to swim to shore. The one with that odd ball tool last trip I was on was me

SSI uses "Experience Levels" based on number of dives, but these levels are numbers ranking from 1-10 and then "Pro" for 5000 dives.

CMAS uses levels as well, but I'm not aware of any using stars to represent diver levels.

CMAS actually award stars.

CMAS* equates to an Open Water Diver
CMAS** Rescue Diver
CMAS*** Dive Leader or equivalent

Their Instructor levels are also star related.

The British Sub Aqua Club has an affiliation with the CMAS and this enables you to obtain an equivalency card.

Ahh, ok. I've just always heard CMAS listed as CMAS Level 1, etc.
