Default Funny Hair Raising story

Reason for Dive: Our company dive club decided to go golf ball collecting in a few water hazards at a nice golf course last weekend. We thought we'd give it a try since we've never done it before. I was a bit concerned about vis and the quality of diving which as it turns out is horrible. But the practice of diving in 0 Visibility was good, and this story was well worth our trip.

Background: I was with my Dad and 2 brothers, so there were 4 divers usually with 1 on the surface collecting balls from the 3 divers in the water. As it turned out in this case just my Dad and myself were in the water. We were diving in a water hazard that was made of concrete shaped in a steep V. So all the balls that feel victim to this trap would fall down the sloped V shape until they reached the bottom at about 6 to 7 feet, where it would meet a muddy grave. The shape of this trap made for easy collecting since you just descended the concrete wall and felt around for the mud, this is where all the balls would be.

The Story: I started on one end of the pond, and my Dad on the other. Both of us were in complete darkness, filling up our bags, heading straight for each other along the same line of mud/concrete seam. My 2 brothers were on the surface watching our bubbles get closer..... closer.... and then they started the count down to when they thought we would meet 3..... 2.... 1..... then they saw a lot more bubbles, which made them laugh to the thought of what happened 6 feet below. Now from my perspective..... I was moving quickly along the murky bottom grabbing into the mud collecting balls, when I felt a soft object that when touched moved extremely quickly followed by a scream that sounded as if it came from a 7 yr old school girl. Ya know, it's amazing what you can hear underwater. The sound of a 50 year old Dad screaming from complete terror in the darkness of a murky water hazard.....never thought he sounded like a little girl... maybe it was the distortion of the water that made him sound like that, but I doubt it, he was officially freaked out! Now right after this humorous underwater scream, I knew the moment who it was and that I had touched his hand, so it was all I could do to keep the Reg in my mouth from laughter. After a few seconds I regained my composure, and resumed collecting the last few golf balls, then I surfaced. Upon reaching the surface, I found my 2 brothers doubled over from laughter as my Dad had already recounted the story to them, when he saw me come up, he was shaking his finger at me with a startled smile and said "you got me good!" He later admitted that was the most frightened he has ever been. We will never let him forget it!

Your welcome.... to this day I still get a kick out of that.

As it turns out, that same day I scared the crap out of a golfer who was on this island putting green. I had been down in this water hazard pond for about 10 minutes just making a complete mess of the bottom. (after you pick up 1 ball the dust is just unmanageable so your hands need to revert to the sonar pick up style). So every once in a while I would surface to get a bearing of where I was in relation to this putting green. On this particular ocassion I came up and saw 4 golfers setting up for their putts. Now you need to understand what I looked like. I had on a black hoody, black mask, black wetsuit, not really looking 100% human. I took out my reg for a moment, looked towards my next collecting area, placed my reg back in my mouth (which needed to be cleared of water) cleared the reg... when I did that it made the normal high pitched sound which completely freaked out one of the golfers.... He swung around in this very clenched, startled stance and starred in my direction.... obviously trying to figure out what he was looking at. Once I saw that he was looking at me I could've done 1 of 2 things. 1: wave at him so he knew I was human.... or 2: slowly sink back under the surface like the Penguins on the movie Madagascar "you didn't see annnyythingggg!" So I choose option #2, and left him bewildered... ever wondering what he saw that day. Awesome... just awesome.. How do you continue putting after seeing that?

I'll be warey when i'm playing now... Watch for Bubbles in the water...

Mind you, having said that... if you were diving in the water... where was your dive flag? Or your SMB? tut... irresponsible
