Question Off Land Diving?

Off Land Diving?

Here is a question…..
Most of the time when people talk about diving it’s off boats, weather it’s a carter or a personal boat and I realize that most of the interesting stuff (downed boats / aircraft) are out in the middle of lakes or oceans but what about off land dives?
Most of the time I have just done day trips to local quarries that have been setup for diving. Is it possible / legal to do some research on a area / water way / body of water drive there, find a spot to walk in and do some diving????

It really depends on the location. We have some local lakes we can just jump in and dive. (although, most are too murky to bother) But, we have other lakes that we cannot dive at all or have to write in for permisison prior to diving. (there is a GA Power power plant located on the lake) Our closest quarry does not allow diving period. It's on church property and they don't want the liability issues. My advice would be, if you find a place you would like to dive, research it first to make sure you aren't trespassing or breaking any laws.

Doing the research to find whats up/down stream (power stations, water depths, etc) would not be all that hard, I would think... but how would one find out if you need to write in for permisison? would the Ministy of Natural Resources know something like that?
+ Does any one know of a book that maps out dive spots for Ontario, Canada?

Good question. At the lake we need permission to dive, there is a gate we have to pass to pay for entry. That's where we got our info. If it's a "public" lake that has houses, etc located on it, I doubt there are any restrictions. A quarry is normally run by someone that owns the land. But on lakes, be warned, although we, as divers, know the the rules and regs of the Dive Flag, most boaters (at least here in the US) are oblivious to what the diver down flag means, much less how far to stay away from them. We've actually had boaters come up and try to take the flag because they thought it "looked cool."

Huggy,

Try contacting a local dive shop: they would know what's what with any nearby dive spots.
