Default Service your Regs

We all should get our regs serviced at least once a year. I had a dive shop send off my Mares regs and I thought it was kinda pricey. I thought that next time I would just mail it to the makers myself and try to save a couple of bucks, so I looked around and the guys who make the regs won't service them unless it is sent to them by an authorized dealer.

Has anyone else run into this and how do you get your regs serviced?

I keep the cost down in a couple of ways:

I get them serviced every two years or so unless there's a problem. Since I dive almost exclusively in fresh water, this seems to be enough.

I send them directly to the guys the shops send them to. The shops probably won't tell you who they are, so ask around. Shops rarely go to the manufacturers.

I'll ask around for sure. I got another year to make somthing happen. I was thinking of contacting some of those scuba repair schools and other dive shops to find a tech certified on Mares regs.
