Diving on the second reefline in Fort Lauderdale, the end of my dive was near.
I decided to move off the reef into the sandy area for a few minutes...a good way to find dropped items. I immediately saw a stingray resting on the bottom...attached to a shaft...a line...and a speargun! I was in luck as I had a pair of scissors with me. I cut the line, grabbed the gun, and began thinking about that shaft. Surprisingly, the ray did not move (probably worn out from dragging the gun. The shaft was in a non-vital area, so I pushed it through
(as in the old Western movies), and had my gun. This action probably saved the ray's life. On an unrelated note, I once bumped into a commercial diver walking about the reef with no fins on! He simply weighted himself down heavily, and went for a walk on the reef! I gave him a lecture as he exited the surf, about the protection of the reef and the joy of neutral bouyancy! (You can't make this stuff up).
