Who is your diving hero & why?

For those members of a certain age, like me, there were two diving heros on the tube while we were growing up, at least in the US: Jacques Cousteau and Mike Nelson.
Everybody knows about Cousteau, but Nelson might be just an American phenomenon. He was the hero of the series Sea Hunt, a kind of underwater detective. A real "man's man" played by Lloyd Bridges, I frankly don't remember just what his job was, but the plot always led to an underwater showdown between him and the bad guys involving dive knives as big as your arm. We still call them "Mike Nelson knives". Silly as it was, it did get a lot of kids thinking about diving.

He's the whole reason I dive! What is the point of diving unless you have a big honkin' knife strapped to your leg. Bends? fugedda 'bow it. The main danger in diving is someone swimming out from behind some obstacle and cutting your air supply. I remeber one episode where he dove in the sewer pipes with perfect vis I might add and swam until he emerged from the pipe's discharge end in the ocean and SURPRISE! someone swam up from behind as he emerged and attempted to cut his air supply! Why do I think it was Loyd Bridges though? The '60's did intervine though. I smile just thinking about those shows.
