Lightbulb Artificial Reefs For Scuba Diving – A Useful Guide To Building A Reef

Quote:
Coral reefs die for many reasons, both from natural disasters and manmade pressures. A reef system that took hundreds of years to grow can be destroyed in a single day. When reefs die, fish populations disappear, fishermen lose their livelihoods, and tourists disappear.

Whilst reef conservation is the most cost effective counter-measure, many believe that a more active solution is required. Successful artificial coral reef programmes have been undertaken in many destinations worldwide.

The following few basic steps will help you with a successful artificial reef project:....

Artificial reefs have been quite a success story in this country. The only failure I can think of is the one off Ft. Lauderdale: it was made of tires held together by steel bands, and the steel rusted. Tires are loose all over the place and it's taking a big cleanup effort.

The UK are a little behind on the concept but one of the success stories down the south of England would be the sinking of HMS Scylla. She has responded splendidly and has become a real haven for sealife.

There's your answer!! More wrecks - more artificial reefs!

With the success of the Oriskany and, hopefully, the Vandenburg next Spring, they will look into more BIG artificial reef programs world wide.
