Johan Van Oldenbarnevelt was built by Netherlands Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company in Amsterdam in 1930. She was 608 ft long by 74 ft wide and displaced 19,040 tons. Sulzer diesels powered twin screws and gave her a service speed of about 17 knots. She could carry 770 passengers; 364 first class, 280 second class and 64 third class. She had a fourth class capacity of 64.

Johan van Oldenbarnevelt was built for the Netherland Line. She sailed from Amsterdam to the East Indies. From 1940-1945 she served as an Allied troopship. After the war she was used for Indonesian and Australian service (1946-1959). In 1959 she was modernized and used for round-the-world cruises. In 1962 she was sold to the Greek Line and renamed Lakonia. She was to be a cruise ship. On December 22 she caught fire off Madeira and sank on December 28th. 128 people were killed.
