Lightbulb Dunedin Star

Launched in 1935 at Cammell Laird shipyard, the Dunedin Star was a cargo liner, 530ft long and refrigerated.

She did the Liverpool, Saldanha Bay (South Africa), Aden & Egypt route for Blue Star Line.

Just off Namibia, she grounded in 1942. The Skeleton Coast was notorious for shipwrecks and anyone who survived the initial wreck, often perished trying to reach the shore. A rescue tug, Sir Charles Elliot, also foundered and her crew were killed trying to swim ashore.

A Ventura bomber that had dropped supplies onto the beach also crashed on the way back to base, the crew survived and along with the survivors from the ship were rescued once they reached Windhoek, on Christmas Eve...some 26 days after the loss of the Dunedin Star.

Her cargo was partially recovered in 1951 and at low tide, some of the cargo can still be seen.
