All of the Mares gear I had I enjoyed. I put all my stuff through its paces, I went from Divemaster through MSDT using my gear. It all held up well. I made sure to get it serviced once a year. My reg. Mares abyss25. The Decor I had did not hold up as well. If a little dirt got in the second stage (and I mean little) it would free flow. Don't remember the name of the unit. The fins, volo, computer however my computer was a diverite. If anyone finds one deep in Cozumel, I am still looking for mine.

Good luck on your Divemaster.

Cool. They give you a knife?! The whole reason I learned to dive was so I could strap a big honkin' knife on my leg. But then my first exposure to diving was Sea Hunt with Loyd Bridges. Behind every rock was another diver with a knife waiting to swim out and cut your hose! I suppose this preceded the the fabled buddy system.

You might want to upgrade the computer to a Vyper which has a PC download ability. It's neat to be able to see your dive graphed out. It also makes logging a lot easier.

Can't speak to Mares stuff everything else I own has diverite stamped on it.

Scuba Mama you lost your dive computer? Ouch. If you ever find it it would make for a heckuva dive profile. Your SAC would be off the charts.

Considering my location in the water it went over a deep canvass. I think it imploded or was swallowed by a large fish. Yeah, I would love to have seen it after the week in the water but I will never know. I had it for two years before the loss and never had a problem with it. I also carry two computers just in case of a problem. I was glad to have a second one that week with a full profile. I believe a lot in self reliance and back up systems. Once you go for divemaster and especially instructor you dive pretty much alone.

As for the diver going for divemaster, you should have back ups with your gear and thats were I would put my money. After that base it on where your diving as a divemaster and what type of special gear you may need. For example my area it's a good idea to have a dry suit.

This may be a silly or uninformed question, but you are getting FREE equipment for a divemaster internship??? Sorry, this is all new to me, I posted yesterday about starting my DM course and am looking into what my expectations should/could be for DM work, etc.

Some facts about training and diving, Nothing is free. Check with the shop trying to get you to move up. Ask what they expect of you and what are they going to do in return? The only time I had free gear is a bottle of mask defog left at a dive site and I found a snorkel once. I have borrowed the shops gear but from divemaster on the expect you to have your own gear and be responsible for it. Find out how long the course would be and the costs they are expecting you to cover. If you don't have gear similar to the shop most will expect you to change it out and buy similar gear.

I've had very good luck with Mares:
Ruby reg (no longer made) - terrific.
M2 computer - good, basic nitrox computer. Flooded the battery compartment with salt water because of a poorly seated o-ring, and the sucker came back to life with just a cleaning.
ESA mask - only 6-window mask I've seen. A bit bulky, but works great with stick-on bifocal lenses in the lower windows.
