Default Fins in the pool.

Ok, over the weekend i took a tune up class, and the fins were just not working as well as i would like.

I have mares, they are around 23in in length from heel to the front of the fin, they are whole and not split. its not that they were uncomfortable but, it seemed like i was doing more work then needed when i wanted to swim more then a few feet, also toward the end of the pool dive, the latch for the heel strap popped off, thankfully i was going to the surface when it happened so i could hang onto the wall and fix the fin, but not something that i would want to happen in open water. These fins are probley 2-3yrs old.

what do you guys think, time for new fins, or are these problems just becuase i havent dived in a few years?

I would have the shop check that strap, Mares makes good stuff IMHO, and it should definately last a while.
If you think the fins require too much effort, get some different stlyes from your LDS and try them out. I think it might just be that you havn't dived in a while.

If you used these fins before and they were ok then your legs need time to get used to them again The finstraps and clips on mares are interchangable with other makes. Mares quick release clips which are quite good but IMHO have a look at SS springs, they are easy to put on and take off. Have a look here http://www.finstrokes.com/scuba_kit/fins.html

Ditto. I have homemade springs on my main fins and they work just fine.

I like the spring releases for their ease of use.

scubaman, I am just wondering if the fact that you haven't been in the water for 2-3 years was a contributing factor to you having to do more work with your finning? Bending your knees and 'cycling' underwater can be a lot of hard work for little return. It is amazing how much we unlearn when we stay out of the water for any length of time. Next pool session concentrate more on your finning technique, keeping your legs straight, toes pointed and using your thighs rather than your knees.

Probably, but it's a lot cheaper. I'll send you the instructions if you like.
