Thanks for the advise. I located the guy who used to have the shop. He once owned a shop called Breathe Deep Scuba that in the summer served Deep Creek Lake and in the winter months was up at Mount Storm WV. He still has a breathable air compressor and will do tank fills so I am in luck.
As for the diving up around here it really is a mixed bag. Mt. Storm lake which is about 40 min from Deep Creek is known for it's temps. A large coal fired power plant heats the lake and on Thanksgiving day, even though air tems were around 35, the lake water was 68. Viz in Mt. Storm is poor, some days you might score 25' if it is sunny and nice out, other days you might get 2 inches if its foggy and just a bad day. Worse yet, the lake is very silty and that stirs up killing what little viz you have.
On a plus side at Mt. Storm is the fish life. All of the fish are very diver tame and as soon as you hit the 25' dive platform you are swarmed by channel catfish. If you want a more diverse fish population searching the rocks along the shore at about 15' can show you bluegill, walleye and perch. I have read that Mt. Storm lake is home to hybrid striped bass, yet I have not seen any.
Deep Creek Lake in McHenry offers better diving then Mt. Storm. This time of year, if you are willing to fight the 48 degree water temp will give you 50' visibility and some great lake diving. My gf and I dove it on Sat and it was really great. Once we got over the intial chill we had a nice 40 min dive scoping out freshwater clams and unique bottom terrain. The water temp at 40 ft was a dismal 41. |
