Doesn't really matter that much what others think, and you're roght to research and do reviews but just make sure it fits you. Don't buy it unless you've tried it on :-)

The Mares X-Vision, most people who have used this mask have been from one of two places, I love it will use nothing else, or hate it never want it again. One of the shops I worked at sold Mares. Not much middle ground. Most common complaint not a good seal. Best advise make sure it fits you well and your comfortable even at depth with the mask.

And now they have the new Liquid Skin Mares mask - which uses an even softer skirt material - and I've yet to have someone order one and not love it!

Howdy!
I just got one of the Mares X-vision masks on a deep discount close-out sale. I was planning to keep it as a back-up, but it seals so nicely (I'm one of those lucky folks that it seems that over 75% of the masks in the dive shop give a nice good seal), is very comfortable, and seems as though I might have a greater field of vision with it -- I'm probably going to make it my primary.

My sweetheart has one too - it's his back-up....he got a 'deep discount' too -- he found it on the bottom of the lake! - guess that says something for keeping a spare.

Fit is the most important thing, it trumps everything else.
Most advanced divers prefer low volume: it is easer to equalize, clear, and is less bulky.
A purge valve is one more thing that can go wrong, clearing your mask is not a big deal.
IMHO, skirt color (black, clear, or tinted) is a matter of personal preference, as are side windows, x-vision type design, tinted lenses, and all the other options.
I highly recommend a slap strap, they are unbreakable.
