Default ARe the online sites worth it?

I usually try to stick with purchasing things from local shops since the service and everything is so much better when you can get it in person. However do the online sites carry good quality equipment. Diving is so new to me that I don't know what is name brand what is not. The dive shop I am taking my class from is really good and offers 25% off MSRP on all purchases with in the first year of taking the class. But if I find a really great deal on line I'd like to know if I'm buying the same quality this guy or other shops would sell me. An extremely close family friend, my Godfather who I actually call my uncle, recommended this guy. He's a Gold Level Cressi service and other manufacturers high level certification. The guy is great, friendly, and knowledgible, so I dont feel bad if I toss him some extra cash. I just want to think that if I find a great deal online, it wont be bad to go with.

BTW what are some good brands to consider?

I usually buy major dive bling from the LDS. Fit, comfort, convenience, warranty, sage advice and instant gratification push me in the door. I have been in shops I wouldn't buy an air fill from. If the folks make you feel comfortable and answer your questions and let you take your time stick with them. I would also suggest you rent the equipment if possible or get a loaner to dive with it first and really check it out. You don't know what it's really like till you get in the water. Ask about buying the rental gear. My sister got a dive rite bc, reg, octo, spg for half off and the stuff was practically new! If they come across like used car salesmen RUN to the nearest web portal. I like dive rite. If you can't find a good dealer locally for them go to dive rite express. They are fine people and they are factory authorized. Get what you are comfortable with though. You have to dive with it not me.

I'll just do what I usually do for my bikes and camera then. Stick with a local shop instead of online or super store unless it's something less significant of a purchase.
