Does your mask seal properly around your nose? If it does, there shouldnt be any water to inhale.

Have you tried a mask with a purge valve?

well it all happens when i am clearing the mask. not all the water exists and whatever remains down by the nase section of the mask gets reverted up my nose.........i do not believe i can breath without a mask on. the little pressure i use to breath in through the regulator allows the slightest intake through my noseas well.....causing coughing while submerged. since i cannot plug my nose fully i need to find an alternative? i used a mares mask. i appreciate any helpful tip!!!!!! i really would like to dive, but safely.

Does you mask have a purge valve? It would seem that you could blow all the water out without any going up your nose. Just don't inhale.

In most instances, I would try to steer people away from a purge valve, but in this case, I must agree with MgicTwnger. A mask with a purge valve might be your best bet until you can work through this with practice.
In your O/W classes, didn't you have to breathe without a mask, do the no mask swim and mask removal/replacement? How did you make it through those?

Just for the record, like dalehall I do not recommend purge valves, but this seems to be a special case.

i actually stoped the diving coarse. i learned to clear the mask and i know there is a test without the mask on. i honestly cannot suck the air through the resperator without air wanting to go through my nose. i have tried many ways and water continues to trickle up my nostrils. this is why i stopped the classes. i have no idea if there is any products out there that may aid in this issue. i really dont want to not dive. i have no issues with it other than the unsafety of water up my nose. i did learn to clear the mask witout issue but i need some sort of nose device to aid in this issue.......

Unfortunately, you have to be able to breathe through you nose to equalize pressure in the mask. I don't know of any answer for your problem.

In what way did the surgery effect your breathing. Do you take air in through your nose everytime you breath? Are you able to swim under water with out getting water in your nose? If so, you should be able to do this. There is no way to close up you nose completely while diving. You have to be able to exhale in the mask to clear it and equalize. I remind my students you can always breath out through your nose with or without the mask on as long as you second stage is no your mouth you have air.
