Default question on equipement insurance

So I was going to start my equipment insurance with H20nsurance.com through DAN.

-I am kind of wondering what is going on though. I noticed they had a little thing in the policy that states the policy only covers within the 48 continous and a few other places. Does this mean I am covered only in the US, or that only US citizens can be covered? i would think i would be covered all over the world.

-Has anyone had any instances where they did not cover an item? Can you explain. I am just trying to figure out if it is worth it to go with them again, or if i should take out a seperate policy with my homeowners insurance company.

-Are there any other insurance companies you use for your underwater camera gear?

Im just trying to make sure my new rig will be totally taken care of, and that i wont be denied a claim because of some small technicality.

Thanks!

H2O coverage is only for US citizens. However it is worldwide in coverage.

The other major insurer is DEPP (http://www.equipmentprotection.com).

There have been several discussions comparing the two, mostly over on the Camera/Housings board, but in short:

H2O pays out in cash, has a higher deductible, and does not cover for losses while the equipment is in your "care and control" (i.e., dropping while being handed off to you from the dive boat, washed overboard from the dive boat).

DEPP is a replacement/repair policy. You don't get cash, you get a replacement/repaired unit. Lower deductibles, basically will cover for anything. Have to cover for the F word separately. Used to require insuring at least a regulator and BC before you could cover for unintentional water exposure, but no longer.

A followup question. When getting the flood insurance do you insure just the camera and storbes, or the housing as well? I.e. with the housing is it just a matter of drying out and replacing the ring / part which leaked? or are there electronics as well that will need to be replaced?

It varies by housing, not all have electronics in them.

Some people like to insure the housing so that if your camera is out of production when it dies (and the housing thus becomes unusable), you can replace both. For lower cost housings this is less of an issue: I don't bother insuring my PT-015s against flood, basically I think of them as disposable.

Ok, another thought- flood insurance. Seems that alot of folks only add it for the housing if they think the housing has electronics inside.

I rememer reading somewhere (so I could have just dreampt it) that with a flood the pressure can push water up into all those tiny little seals and lead to new floods. IOW, it isn't just a matter of electronics, and if your house cost more than throw-away money you should make sure it gets serviced after any flood (which you can pay for yourself or insure against, your choice)

hey

I just read these posts and became very discouraged. I definately want my camera insured just incase. I can't believe there are only two companies that will work with us. I did check the DAN site and it said their coverage was the USA except to states. And they would not cover loss while in your control.
I guess I will be checking with the other company, which is not what I want to do I would like to support DAN as much as possible.
