Default Wet Suits

Hi There!

I am a new diver, and I have a question about wetsuits. I notices on most sites, they have a different section for wetsuits for scuba diving. Why is this? Is there a difference between normal wetsuits, and those used for scuba diving?

I have found some wetsuits I like, but they are under the surfing section.

It's probally a dumb question but I'd thought I'd throw it out there.

Thanks in advance!

Mike

First it is not a dumb question. Thermal protection is the issue. It you don't need any more then a 2/3mm or shorty for diving then some of the surf wet suits will be just fine. If you need more than that, I would recommend going with scuba specific suits. You can also ask where your ordering from if there would be a problem using the surf suit and if so why.

The basic difference between suits designed for surface use and diving suits is the material. Suits designed for scuba use are generally made from types of neoprene that can better withstand the damaging effect that pressure has on the air bubbles that provide insulation.

if you were to let us know what type of diving you will be doing we could give some direction as to what might best "suit" your needs. lol. i know we are not suppossed to give names of specific companies to buy from so if you want to email me at gooper@shaw.ca i can give you info on who is probably the best dealer for wetsuits/drysuits online. rick

I am in the same situation. I live in OK and will be diving all over. I will be in Arkansas and will be in Fl this summer so what would be your recommendation. I was looking at a thinner suit and then hood. So when in warmer water the thin suit would be fine then in colder water sliding on the hooded vest and be golden. Is my logic completely off or what?

No, a lot of people use layering like that. Since I do all cold water diving at home I dive dry, varying what I wear under the suit as the conditions dictate. When I dive in the tropics I bring a 3/2 steamer with a seperate hood and a 3mil hooded vest to layer if needed. I uses a hood all the time since about 40% of your heat loss is through the head.
