Default Wetsuit underwear

A friend of mine told me you can buy thermals to wear under a wetsuit. Is anybody familiar with this? I haven't heard of it before.

They have them for drysuits, but never heard of anything like that for a wetsuit.

According to my friend it's like adding a couple of mm to your suit. The thermals get wet of course, but they get warmed by your body heat.

I double up with my warm water 3mil under my 7mil for the really cold stuff. The underware would get wet and add considerable wght messing with your buoyancy. Plus it the loft that warms you. As you go deeper the cloth would contract. You're better off with a 1, 2 or 3 mil. Warmer and safer

That sounds like a good idea glynneco, it makes me think of double glazing windows.

Are you sure he's not talking about layering wetsuits as is mentioned above?

MgicTwnger, bet you are right! I have seen some neat 1mm neoprene undershirts/shorts (some with hood attached) just for that sort of thing. Fits really easily under your primary suit and makes a fantastic Red Sea immersion suit.

When I dive warm water I bring a 3/2 steamer and a hooded 3mm shorty. That lets me use layering to adjust to conditions.

I had a 2mm wetsuit with polartec built in. Your buddy may be referring to something like the wetsuit. I used it under my 7mm wet suit when the water was really cold and I used it separate to train with in the pool. It added an extra layer of warmth. The suit was also suppose to be neutrally buoyant. It is hard to find this suit in the US but Henderson makes on called Polartec and Mares has one referred to as isotherm. It looks a lot like wearing a fleece inside your wetsuit. As you can image added material added cost.
