I live in Ontario, Canada so the dive season is sort compared to say Florida and I can’t afford to take dive trips every year to Florida or the cost line. So the bottom line to me is that its more cost effective to rent for apx. $60 for the weekend then spend $1500 to do maybe 5 or 7 dives a season. I still might go out and buy a dive computer just to have the extra bottom time.
As for the wet suit, the other factor is weight change if you lose weight and the suit does not fit right your going to get cold and same with weight gain your going to get cold that’s if you can still fit in it, so thats what $200 gone for a wetsuit.

Bottom line, How much diving do you plan on doing?
Excellent points! I would just add that another reason to have your own computer is that you don't have to figure a rental out on the fly.

You don't have to spend $1500. Check with your local lds's and ask about buying rental gear. Shops will rotate rental gear and sell the old stuff at a significant price discount. My sister got a dive rite bc for half off and a reg packgage for 70% off. You may be able to get a deal for a whole kit or just buy one item at a time and build up your owned equipment. There is a safety issue using rental equipment. The biggest one is using different equipment each time and not having muscle memory to fall back on in an emergency. Also look a e-bay. Besides an eclectic collection of used gear makes you look oh so experienced and mucho cooler then all new!

True there are good deals out there, buying 2hand / rental gear. Even at that there is still a Price tag to it. Diving is not a cheap sport by any means. + From what I have found (this might just be the area I'm in) doing some shopping around really does not seem to help (looking at new items) most DS that have the same items are normally price in the same range give or take $2 to $3 which is wasted on gas looking for the deal.

Dive shops are given very little leeway in pricing by the manufactures, in some cases none at all. The big internet dealers seem to have more clout in this department.
