Sounds to me like it might be a mask squeeze. Make sure your mask fits properly and not to tight on the dive. Also if you feel pressure in the mask exhale slightly through your nose to equalize it.

I agree with Resdivemedic..... This happened to my Dad on a dive in Fiji. He has a wider face, the mask wasn't equalized, and it pushed against the outside corner of his eye... His eye looked exaclty they way you descibe yours. Took a couple days to go away, and in the mean time he switched to a wider mask, and he made sure to equalize it Didn't turn out to be any big deal.... just a simple mistake that looked aweful.

Ah, the joys of facial hair. I have a mustache and I have to clear regularly. No mask squeeze. I don't even get the red lines from the skirt!

I'd do grow a mustache for that reason, but the wife won't let me.... and yes she wears the pants

Default Is there a Scuba Dictionary

Hi im very new here, and I am planning on taking scuba lessons within the next couple months, so I figured I would try to read and learn as much as possible.

You guys used the word or term Octopus, and Equalize your mask so you dont get Red eyes. What is an Octopus (gear) and what do you mean by equalize your mask?

Is there a Scuba Dictionary here on this site that explains all he terms used?

Also what is an integrated Octo? is this something I should purchase if I plan on purchasing scuba gear? Is it a new type of equipment much better than older equipment?

Thanks

Susexful,
Good luck with your future in diving. When you take your first course, you will know what those items are. You can also search the web for basic SCUBA stuff. But in a nut shell: an octopus is a spare breathing regulator used as a backup for you or for your buddy if they have problems. Intergrated or not is your own preference. A mask squeeze occurs when the air space between the mask and you face decreases cause ing a vacuum like effect. The telltale sign is a red, masked shaped bruise were the mask sits on the face. Hope this helps.
