One of my main fears of being in water is the fear of getting a cramp. When I was a kid we were swimming in a river/pond type of area. I dove in once and as I arched my back to turn back up to the top. I caught the worst cramp in my lower back. I could not move my legs or bend over forward. I basically could not move, and began to sink. I gave up and just relaxed, eventually I was able to move my legs and then kick off the bottom and get to the top.
Since then I have on occasion got leg cramps while swimming, but not as bad as that first time in water.

It was a horrible feeling. Its one reason why I do not understand how some people claim to be such great swimmers, and often swim out far into deep water alone. Anyone can get a bad cramp.

Im just too curious of what its like to scuba dive, so im willing to risk it.

One major difference between what you experienced swimming and scuba is you can continue to breathe! As was pointed out by Resqdivemedic hydration and stretching can go along way to eliminating the problem. There are methods of dealing with a cramp underwater such as fin pull. You always have a buddy with you if you get into trouble to help as well. Diving for me has been a life altering experience. The joy, fun, adventure and comraderie have been a positive affirmation of life. Not to mention you get to buy really cool toys. While my neighbors are talking about a great putt on some golf course last weekend I talk about going out 20 miles from Oregon Inlet, 130 ft down and diving on an unidetified wreck. Going to the National Archives and helping to identify it. BETTER stories. Much better stories! Live the Discovery Channel lifestyle don't just watch it on TV. Even bigscreen HD doesn't do it justice. The beauty of it is anyone can do it. Get certified and get out there you will not regret a moment.

True, being able to breathe under water with a cramp would be less frightening. lol
