Default DAN - What does it cover?

OK, so my husband and I just lost our DAN coverage that we had for the first 6 months after being certified. We are interested in getting coverage through DAN again, but I am kind of confused now that I'm looking into it.

It appears that you can be a DAN member without Diving Insurance. Then, it appears that there are three levels of insurance, beyond just being a DAN member. I am not sure which plan is necessary, or what is covered by just being a DAN member. I am really confused by the information on their site. I am not sure if just being a DAN member covers anything. It looks like, for my husband and I to have the most basic coverage through DAN we'l have to fork out about $100/year. (Not that it's a lot, but we already pay medical insurance of $320/month)

Your input would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
Nichole

Look at the depth coverage. That what drives the price. GET SOME even if it's the cheapest. What you want is coverage that takes care of chamber rides, air trans (special pressurized planes) and the depth you plan on diving.

My brother got bent and didn't have DAN. Major problems with his health insurance

Forget the trip insurance, gear insurance if you're on a budget. But get the minimal dive coverage if nothing else.

Looking at this I probably just confused you. Call DAN they can help

Yep, what glynecco said. Dan covers diving-related stuff regular insurance does not.

You have a couple of options. Dan insurance is all about scuba diving if you call the operators they are real helpful in answering questions. I have been a member for over 7 years. One trip to recompression chamber can be over $30,000.00 I figured the insurance was cheaper. Dan will also coordinate with the hospital and doctors enroute to make sure the hospital is set up for you. There is also a dive insurance called dive assure, I will admit I don't know as much about them but I do know divers who like there program. I think you may have had a miss understanding in how D.A.N. coverage worked while you were a student. The rules are you will receive free student coverage for 6 months or until you are certified as an open water diver. So, if you took your certification two weeks after in after signing up and completed the training dives the insurance would then expire. As a certified diver you are responsible for your own insurance.

Thank you all for your answers!

Wow, I guess it's a good thing we are getting our rear-ends insured before our trip! Our instructor didn't make that very clear.

So, we'll probably go with the lowest or midrange coverage for now. For the middle one it comes out to about $12/month for us, which I think we can manage.

Well, off to the DAN website, to finish up my order!
