Default Diving after decompression sickness

Hi,

I wondered if anyone could help me with an answer to this - I last went diving in the Red Sea in Nov 2005, where I did my advanced PADI. I managed to end up with mild decompression sickness (grade IV?) and had to spend four hours in a chamber and a few days getting oxygen for an hour at a time. I know that sounds really stupid - i should add that I was with a good, reputable dive company and I made sure my bottom times and stops were all ok, I think i was just dehydrated rather than plain daft.

I am going to Thailand in five weeks and I am desparate to get diving again. I suspect it will all be fairly shallow dives, 20m or less. Should I have a medical before I go again? Will I need to get special insurance as a result of this? If so, can anyone recommend a good insurance company who will take this into account? I know some insurers will class it as a 'pre-existing condition'.

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated, thank you!

call DAN. Get DAN insurance. See a Doc who knows diving. Dan can suggest one.

Yes to everything glynneco said, plus you might consider taking a "tune-up" class for divers who havn't gotten wet in a while. Also using a computer on the conservative side is a good thing.

Yes to all of the above, plus make sure you don't get dehydrated again in Thailand!

If you haven't been in the water since 2005 I would really endorse MgicTwnger's suggestion that you consider taking a 'tune-up' class. If you turn up in Thailand they will charge you a lot of money to undertake a Scuba Review and I can guarantee it wont be as useful as if you take a few tune up classes before you go on holiday. Plus any time 'training' in Thailand will cut into your holiday time.

After doing some research one thing I found is that people who get a DCI hit, no matter what severity, may be more susceptible for another hit. As was previously stated, contact DAN for a dive doc in your area. Dive safe and good luck.

Hi again,

Thanks a lot for your help, I will certainly look at having a medical and doing a 'tune up' before I go.

Thanks again,

Gillian
