Default My tank o ring broke during a tank fill today!

Today I had a tank filled. After the shop owner filled the tank she tested the tank to check the psi. During the test the O ring broke and the tank lost about 1000 pounds in about 5 seconds. Could this happen during a dive? If it could you would be out of air in less than 20 seconds! I have never heard of this happening and I don't hear about divers dieing because of broken O rings.

O-rings go all the time, seldom during a dive. But that's what buddies and redundancy are for. A few weeks back my buddy had a freeflow at 125', probably reg freeze. We shared my air, did a proper ascent with stops, no problem.

O-rings don't kill divers; panic kills them. When was the last time you practiced buddy share? If it was during class you could have a problem. You should practice the skill a couple of times a year. The confidence gained will keep you alive and diving no matter what o-rings or other equipment decides to fail!

I agree with the guys your skills should always be upto date. However, how old was the o-ring, and did it have any nicks or cuts that caused it to blow.
If you remember when putting your gear together one of the first things you check is the o-ring, is it there, and what shape is it in. I am betting this one was not in good shape before if gave.

No, with all the training I have done I have not an o-ring give out, for me or my students. A few have blown them off the tank by the wrong procedure to remove the reg. With you will hear me say ahh, there's the scuba diver.

spare o-rings are part of my save a dive kit. They fall out before they fail on me!

Same here.

Tip: a dentist's pick is great for removing o-rings. Get one cheap on eBay.
