Default Scuba diver has convulsions after inhaling toxic oxygen

Quote:
SAN DIEGO—San Diego lifeguards say a recreational scuba diver nearly drowned after going into convulsions underwater.

The 35-year-old Orange County resident was using mixed gases in his tank to extend his dive time but seized up because he inhaled a toxic amount of oxygen after a 200-foot deep dive a mile offshore Sunday.

A fellow diver quickly put his own regulator in the man's mouth to supply air. They were about 15 feet underwater and had stopped to decompress when the convulsions began.

Lifeguards responded to flares sent from the dive boat and transported the man to USCD Medical Center.

Sounds like lack of proper training, or failure to follow his dive plan.
Deep divers often switch to a bottle oxygen enriched gas at a preplanned point in their ascent in order to decompress faster. Below a certain depth this mix can induce convulsions because of oxygen toxicity.
