Unhappy Vacation Goes Bad :o(

This was sent to me by one of the dive shop owners. I deleted the persons last name as I don't think it would be right for me to post his full name with out permission from the family.

On Thu. Apr. 3, 2008, while vacationing at Ambergris Caye, Belize, Gord
had an incident which resulted in his death. This is a synopsis of
the events that occurred.

This was the group's fourth day of diving. The group was doing its
second
dive of the day. Gord was doing his first dive of the day; he had sat
out
the group's first dive. Also, he did not dive the previous day.

The group entered the water from the boat, descended and stayed in the
same
general area while the dive guide and various divers interacted with
the
nurse sharks there. I was with Gord and another diver, watching the
activities. There was very little swimming as there was only a slight
current and the group was staying in one location for the time being.
The
maximum depth here was about 35-40 feet.

About 10 minutes into the dive, Gord signalled to me that he was going
up.
He didn't indicate why and he didn't appear to be in distress. I
watched as
he slowly ascended to the surface. I kept watching from below until the
boat
arrived to pick him up. At that time I turned away, joined my other
dive
buddy and we continued with the dive.

The dive boat is not big, so that a diver has to remove his gear in the

water and hand it to someone on the boat, before climbing up the side
ladder
to get into the boat. From what the boat driver later reported, Gord
got on
board after removing his gear on the surface. At that time he was short
on
breath. He went to his dive bag and took a puff from an inhaler.
Shortly
after that he collapsed.

The boat driver and Gord were the only ones on the boat. The driver
called
the dive shop from his cell phone to report the situation. He left the
area
and drove back to the dive shop. The trip would have taken 5-10
minutes.

Once they got back to the dive shop, CPR was begun. A doctor had
already been summoned by the dive shop. Eventually, the doctor pronounced Gord dead.

In the meantime, another boat had been sent to our dive site to tend to
our group. About 45 minutes after Gord left the group, the rest of the divers
surfaced as a group. After boarding the boat we were told that Gord had
been taken back to the dive shop.

After our group was returned to the dive shop, we were informed of what

happened and that Gord had died.

Later that day, his body was transported by boat to the morgue in
Belize
City. An autopsy was performed on Friday. From the autopsy, the cause
of death was asphyxiation caused by asthma.

His next-of-kin had requested that Gord be cremated in Belize City and
presumably, this has been carried out.

It's sad to hear of these stories, I feel for the families. I just have to wonder why the dive operator allowed him to dive knowing about his condition with asthma.
